BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - The Western Kentucky University swimming and diving teams held the 34th Annual Red and White intrasquad meet Saturday at the Preston Center Aquatic Center with the Red team winning both the men's and women's meets.
The Red men's team downed the White team 159-109, while women's Red squad edged the White 74-59.
Senior Jarred Janes (Carlsbad, N.M./Carlsbad) led the Red team with a pair of wins in the sprint freestyle events. Janes, a transfer from St. John's University, won the 50 freestyle in 21.52 and the 100 (47.93). For the White, sophomore diver Andy Ray (St. Joseph, Mich./St. Joseph) won both the 1-meter (213.68) and 3-meter (204.90) diving events. Senior Gord Veldman (Kingston, Ontario/Bayridge) was in midseason form in the 100 backstroke winning the event in an impressive 51.41.
The Red women's team had a pair of double winners leading them to victory. Junior Marci Kacsir (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central), last year's Sun Belt Conference Diver of the Year won the 1-meter with a score of 223.88 and the 3-meter with 212.18. Red squad teammates sophomore Lucy Faria (Madison, Wisc./West) and senior Deanne Thomas (Bowling Green, Ky./Bowling Green) also won two events. Faria swept the breaststroke events winning the 100 in 1:09.55 and finishing the 200 in 2:30.17. Thomas won both backstroke events swimming the 100 in 1:01.13 and the 200 in 2:14.16. For the White team, senior captain Carol Brown (Fortaleza-Ce, Brazil/Farias Brito) was first in the 50 free (25.44) and 100 free (56.34).
Several of the Lady Toppers freshmen also had impacts on the meet. Freshmen women won six of the 15 events and swept the top three in four events. Freshman Jordan Beck (Normandy, Tenn./Tullahoma) set an intrasquad meet record in the 200 butterfly completing the distance in 2:11.86.
Western Kentucky will open the regular season on Saturday when it travels to Lexington, Ky. to participate in the Kentucky Relays.
