DENTON, Texas - Western Kentucky's men's golf team lowered its score by two strokes from Monday's first round but fell two spots into a tie for fourth at the Sun Belt Conference Championships in Denton, Texas.
The Hilltoppers were led by senior Chris Cassell, who came storming back with a 72 Tuesday to finish in a four-way tie for 25th after two rounds. Cassell's even-par round was the seventh best of the day and came after an opening-round 80. Sophomore all-conference candidate Jared Topmiller also shot a 74 to help pace the Hilltoppers.
Junior Eric Mason, the first-round leader, shot a 77 Tuesday to slip back to 13th place after an opening-round 71.
Western's men fell two positions into a tie with Louisiana-Lafayette for fourth place as Middle Tennessee shot a 291 and Denver posted a 294 to move ahead.
The Lady Toppers fell one position to ninth place and trail eighth-place New Orleans by four strokes.
Sophomore Jennifer McGill led Western with an 81 and dropped into a three-way tie for 23rd, while sophomore Crystal Anglea stumbled to a three-way tie for 20th with an 84.
The final round for both squads will be held Wednesday at the Trophy Club Country Club in Denton, Texas, with the men's team teeing off at 9:40 a.m. (CDT) at the Hill Golf Course, and the women starting at 8 a.m. from the Hogan Course.
