Rochester, Mich. - Both Western Kentucky men's and women's swimming teams made solid showing at the National Independent Conference Championships this weekend. The Lady Toppers turned in a team score of 488 to finish in fourth place, while the men finished fifth with a score of 355. Cincinnati won the women's meet with a 696 and Southern Methodist took the men's meet with an 892.5.
The Lady Toppers opened the meet by finishing second in the 200 freestyle relay. The team of Brandi Beckwith (Jr., Lexington, Ky.), Sydney Mountford (Jr., Lexington, Ky.), Char Janes (Sr., Kingwood, Texas) and Megan Zerhusen (Jr., Georgetown, Ky.) turned in a time of 1:34.27 in the event. Beckwith also won the 200 Individual Medley in 2:02.42. She was also second in the both the 100 and 200 Backstroke with time of 56.70 and 2:01.61, respectively. Mountford finished second in the 200 Freestyle with a time of 1:51.23. Zerhusen placed second in the 100 freestyle in 51.53 seconds. Diver Michelle Lynch (Sr., The Colony, Texas) finished second in the 1-meter dive with a score of 255.85.
The 800 Freestyle Relay team of Beckwith, Zerhusen, Mountford and Julia Van Antwerp (So., Springfield, Va.) won the event with a time of 7:31.24. The 200 Medley Relay team of Beckwith, Janes, Zerhusen and Nicole Fisher (Jr., Gaithersburg, Md.) finished second with a time of 1:45.83.
In the men's meet, Ryan Crosby (Fr., San Marcos, Calif.) finished fourth in the 100 Butterfly with a time of 49.72. Andrew Priest (Sr., Brentwood, Tenn.) placed third in the 200 Breaststroke in 2:01.80. Kyle Nunez (So., Kingwood, Texas) won the 100 Butterfly with a time of 51.11 seconds.
