Little Rock, Ark. - The Western Kentucky women's swimming team dominated the five-team field to win the inaugural Sun Belt Conference Swimming and Diving Championships on Saturday.
WKU's Sydney Mountford (Jr., Lexington, Ky.) was named co-swimmer of the Year as she claimed first place in the 1650 freestyle (17:25.14), 500 freestyle (5:02.22) and 200 freestyle (1:51.63). She was also a member of the 400 freestyle relay team that took first place. Brandi Beckwith-Carey (Jr., Lexington, Ky.) claimed victories in the 200 Individual Medley (2:04.23) and 200 backstroke (2:01.80), both season-best times. She was also on the 400 freestyle relay team and 200 freestyle relay team that took first in those events.
"It is an honor to win the title and we're pleased to be part of the Sun Belt," said coach Bill Powell, who was named as Sun Belt Coach of the Year. "Sydney and Brandi are both outstanding swimmers for us."
Diver Michelle Lynch (Sr., The Colony, Texas) won both the one-meter and three-meter dives during the first two days of the meet. Julia Van Antwerp (So., Springfield, Va.) won the 400 Individual Medley in a season-best time of 4:31.31.
