Oxford, Ohio - The Western Kentucky swimming and diving teams competed in the Eighth Annual Miami Invitational last weekend (Nov. 30- Dec. 2).
Through 42 events featuring 19 teams from all divisions, the WKU men placed third with 944 points and the women fourth with 942 in one of the biggest, most competitive meets in the country.
"Our kids swam great, and I just can't say enough about Brandi Carey," said Western Head Coach Bill Powell.
Brandi Carey (Sr., Versailles, Ky.) broke eight school records this weekend- 50, 100, and 200 freestyle, the 200 individual medley, 100 butterfly, 200 backstroke, and as a member of the 200 and 800 medley relay teams.
She also qualified for the NCAA A-Cut in three events- the 50 free, 100 free and 200 IM- which guarantees her an opportunity to compete in the NCAA championship to be held March 14-16, 2002, at the University of Texas in Austin. Carey's qualifying times were the fastest in the country at the completion of the meet and still rank her near the top of the list in each event.
Powell added, "She is without-a-doubt one of the fastest swimmers in the country."
Gord Veldman (Jr., Kingster, Ontario) also broke a school record and qualified for the B-Cut of the NCAA tournament with his swim in the 100 backstroke. His time just missed the required A-Cut time. He also has a great chance of also competing in the NCAA tournament. The men's competition will be held March 21-23, 2002 in Athens, Georgia.
The Western swimmers will compete again this Friday (December 7) at Cumberland College in Williamsburg, Ky.
