Bowling Green, Ky. - Western's Swimming Head Coach Bill Powell has announced the signing of two high school seniors from Indiana who will swim on the hill next season.
Lisa Ross of Merrillville and Merrillville High School and Stacey Schortgen of Churuhusen, a senior at Carroll High School, both signed a Letter of Intent to WKU.
Ross, the daughter of Robert and Judy Ross, is now competing in her fourth varsity swim season, being state finalist and team MVP all three previous years. She currently holds school records for the 200 IM, 500 Freestyle, 100 Fly, 100 Breaststroke, 200 Freestyle Relay and 200 Medley Relay.
Ross also currently has a 4.0 Grade Point Average, is ranked 1st in her senior class, and has received an Athletic Blanket with 6 or more varsity letters, also competing in soccer and tennis.
"Lisa can be an exceptional athlete for us. Her versatility will allow her to fit in a multitude of events for Western," Powell said.
Schortgen, daughter of Charles and Lee Ann Schortgen, has also excelled through her high school swimming career. She was named MVP of her team both her freshman and sophomore years, named First-Team All-Conference the past three years, and was a state qualifier her sophomore and junior year.
Shortgen is also active in the Spanish Club, "C" Club, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
Coach Powell says, "Stacey has the potential to step up and contribute as a freshman. Her strength is in the distance events where the college format of events really suits her better than high school format."
Both ladies plan to compete for the Toppers in the 2002-2003 season.
