CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Western Kentucky men's and women's swimming and diving teams impoved their records to a perfect 10-0 on the season after defeating the College of Charleston this weekend. The men won their meet with the Cougars 106-83 while the women continued their winning ways with a 112.5-90.5 victory. The victories over the weekend move the men's current winning streak to 41 meets while the women have won 31 straight contests.
The meet got off to a rocky start for the Lady Toppers as the women tied with the College of Charleston in the 200 medley relay. They bounced back quickly as Julia VanAntwerp won the 800 freestyle (9:41.72) and Penta Stanley finished second (9:49.83). VanAntwerp also notched a victory for WKU in the 200 individual medley (2:29.26). Sydney Mountford also collected victories for the Lady Toppers with a win in the 200 freestyle (2:12.47) and in the 400 freestyle (4:45.20). Also winning for the Lady Toppers was Megan Zerhusen in the 50 freestyle (28.64) and the 100 freestyle (1:01.82). Western sealed the victory by winning the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:57.25.
The men rebounded from losing the first relay of the meet when freshman Dean Cheek won the 800 freestyle (8:52.16). Jay Smith continued the Toppers winning ways when he won the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:01.34 and David Tucker captured the 50 freestyle by posting a time of 23.75 and the 100 freestyle with a time of 54.41. Also winning for the Toppers was Kyle Nunez in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:14.38, Ryan Crosby in the 100 butterfly (58.29) and Brent Foland in the 100 backstroke (1:01.61).
Both the men and women will put their perfect 10-0 records, along with 41 (men) and 31 (women) dual meet winning steaks, on the line this weekend when they host Wright State at the Preston Pool at noon on the WKU campus.
