Milwaukee, Wisc. - The Western Kentucky men's and women's swimming and diving teams notched season-opening wins against the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee late Thursday night. The wins improve both team's records to 1-0 on the year.
The women defeated UWM by a score of 137-109 off the strength of an early start from junior Sydney Mountford (Lexington, Ky.) who won the 200 Freestyle with a time of 1:55.97, over five seconds faster than the rest of the field.
The Lady Toppers also received wins by junior Megan Zerhusen (Georgetown, Ky.) (50 freestyle, 200 IM), senior Kristi Kostelnik (Winchester, Ky.) (100 freestyle), sophomore Deanne Thomas (Bowling Green, Ky.) (200 backstroke), sophomore Julia Van Antwerp (Springfield, Va.) (500 freestyle) and senior Michelle Lynch (The Colony, Texas) (one-meter diving).
The WKU women also took the 400 freestyle and 400 medley relays.
The men also took control of their meet early behind strong performances from freshman Dean Cheek (Hornchurch, England) and junior David Tucker (Decatur, Ala.) en route to an easy 133-100 victory.
The Hilltoppers received wins from Cheek (1000 freestyle, 500 freestyle), Tucker (50 freestyle, 100 freestyle), sophomore Kyle Nunez (Kingwood, Texas) (200 IM), freshman Jay Smith (Hopkinsville, Ky.) (200 butterfly), freshman Kevin Kleman (Lakeside Park, Ky.) (200 backstroke) and freshman Clayton Delaney (Cornwall, Ontario) (200 breaststroke).
"We are very excited about the two wins tonight," head coach Bill Powell said. "We are a real youthful team right now, and the competition tonight will help us grow as a team. We have to keep our stamina this weekend as we have two more meets this weekend."
Both the men's and women's teams continue their seasons on Friday evening against Wisconsin-Green Bay at 6 p.m. (CDT).
