Kirin Kumar finished her second season in 2013 as an assistant coach at WKU after coaching previously at North Carolina and Tulsa.
Under Kumar[apos]s assistance, WKU finished the 2013 season with a school-record 43 wins and the program[apos]s first ever Sun Belt Conference Regular-Season Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance. A regular in the first-base box, Kumar helped the Lady Toppers to six wins over nationally-ranked opponents, including Louisiana-Lafayette, South Alabama and Missouri, while guiding them to the SBC Tournament and NCAA Tuscaloosa Regional championship games.
WKU[apos]s championship run included record-setting offensive stats such as program highs in runs (290), triples (18) and RBI (256) among others. The Lady Toppers consistently ranked third in the conference in batting statistics, except for triples where their speed on the bases led them to rank first. At the season[apos]s conclusion, WKU had five student-athletes honored with All-Conference recognition.
The 2012 season ended with a 33-25-1 record in Kumar[apos]s first year on The Hill, the most wins since 2009[apos]s 35-19 mark. The 2012 squad collected record team stats throughout the year, as it posted the most runs (264), triples (15), RBI (227), total bases (666), slugging percentage (.429), hit by pitches (79) and on-base percentage (.353) that at the time were the most in program history.
Kumar previously coached at North Carolina, assisting with the infielders as well as hitting. The Tar Heels finished second in the Atlantic Coast Conference with a 15-8 record, their highest ACC finish since 2008. North Carolina also reached the championship game of the ACC Tournament for the first time in 10 years, wrapping up a 34-21 season.
Prior to coaching in Chapel Hill, Kumar was an assistant at Tulsa from 2005-2010. During her stint with the Golden Hurricane, Kumar was in the dugout for Tulsa[apos]s first Conference USA regular season and tournament titles in 2006 as well as the program[apos]s first NCAA Regional appearance. Tulsa received an NCAA Regional at-large bid in 2008, and won the Conference USA regular season and tournament championship in 2009. During that season, the Golden Hurricane set 10 program records and reached the final of the NCAA Regional hosted by Oklahoma. Tulsa finished that season 40-17.
Kumar graduated from Georgia Tech in May of 2005 with a Bachelor of Science degree in business management. As a player, she was part of the Yellow Jackets[apos] first ACC regular-season and tournament championships in 2002 and their first NCAA Regional, reaching the final game of that regional. Georgia Tech made the NCAA Tournament in each of her four seasons, winning the ACC Championship in her senior season of 2005. Kumar was named to the ACC All-Tournament Team in 2005, hitting .500 in the tournament. She played in 251 games in her career at Georgia Tech, with her senior class graduating as the winningest class in program history.
