LAST TIME OUT
WKU opened 2026 with a four-game weekend series hosting BYU on February 13-16. The Hilltoppers posted a 2-2 series split with the Cougars following wins in game two of a doubleheader on Friday, Feb. 13 and game three on Saturday, Feb. 14, and losses in the series opener on Friday and Monday's series finale.Â
Hilltopper newcomer Lane Arroyos powered the Hilltopper offense through the series, totaling two homers, one double, five hits with four runs scored and five RBIs over the four-game series split with BYU. The Texas native finished posting a .800 SLG% and 12 TB for the series, adding a team-high 25 putouts while recording one assist and turning a double play, finishing with a .960 fielding percentage at first base for the Tops in all four games.
Arroyos registered an RBI single to left field to give the Tops a 2-1 lead in the sixth inning of game one of the series, then set the tone early in game two of Friday's doubleheader, recording a two-run homer in the first inning. Camden Ross finished with two runs scored and an RBI, while JP Acosta contributed a two-RBI effort as the Tops secured a 5-2 victory over the Cougars in game two on Friday.
Left-hander Aaron Robertson earned the win in his first career start with WKU, striking out seven over 4.0 shutout innings while allowing just three hits. Jacob O'Day and Jude Favela combined for 3.1 scoreless innings in relief. After a late two-run rally from BYU in the ninth, Nathan Lawson recorded the final two outs to secure the save.
WKU drew 10 walks in game two and capitalized on limited scoring opportunities, finishing with five runs on five hits to secure the Friday split and even the series at 1-1.
WKU Baseball took game three of the series against BYU on Saturday with a 4-2 victory off a go-ahead two-RBI single from Ross in the bottom eighth. With two outs, the two-run liner plated Arroyos and Daniel Stewart and pushed the Hilltoppers in front 4-2, before left-hander Zach Lyles secured the win in relief, recording three strikeouts in two scoreless innings.
Left-hander Rodney Whaley got the start on the mound in game four of the series and pitched a no-hit inning in the first before BYU broke a scoreless tie with a five-run second inning, capitalizing on four hits to take early control. WKU answered in the second inning as Stewart singled to center, later scoring on a Reid Howard ground out.
After a scoreless top third from Ka'olu Holt pitching in relief, the Tops cut the deficit to 5-2 after an Arroyos double down the right field line drove in Hayden Robbins from second. A three-RBI homer to left field by Stewart drove in Arroyos and Ross and evened the count at 5-5. The Cougars responded with a three-RBI homer to right center to regain the lead before a sac fly to right field drove in another unearned run and gave BYU a 9-5 lead in the fourth.
An RBI single by Arroyos in the bottom fourth plated Manny Alberto and cut the BYU lead to 9-6 before BYU once again responded in the top fifth with a solo homer to center field. An RBI single to right field drove in a second run for the inning and gave the Cougars an 11-6 lead. Acosta later singled to left in the bottom sixth to plate Robbins and cut the lead down to 11-7. After a scoreless seventh, BYU pushed its lead to 12-7 with another solo homer to center field.
BYU was held scoreless in the top ninth, drawing two walks and getting a stolen base but leaving two runners stranded after a pair of flyouts and a ground out. In the bottom ninth, WKU loaded the bases with two walks and a single by Logan Luckett before Grayson Goodbye was hit by a pitch to force in a run and bring the count to 12-8. A strikeout and a flyout ended the final rally by the Tops, leaving three Hilltoppers on base to close the game and wrap a 2-2 series split with the Cougars.

WKU secured a conference tournament title for the first time since 2008 and won its first CUSA Championship since joining the league in 2015. The Hilltoppers were the #2 seed heading into conference tournament play – the highest seed WKU has achieved since becoming a league member. The CUSA title earned WKU an automatic bid to the 2025 NCAA Tournament for the fifth NCAA Regional in program history and its first since 2009.
The 2025 season saw WKU reach 40-plus wins for the sixth time in program history and the first time in 16 years, marking the third consecutive season with 30 or more wins and the third year in a row the Hilltoppers have improved their win total. The Tops posted a stellar 30-3 record playing at home at Nick Denes Field – the most home wins of any Division I team in the 2025 season and the most wins at home in a season in program history.
