The Tops cruised to a 10-2 semifinal victory over #3 Kennesaw State after back-to-back walk-off wins in the first two rounds of the CUSA Tournament.Â
Â
Behind four home runs, WKU powered past the Owls to earn its first CUSA Championship appearance in program history. Kyle Hvidsten homered twice, Ryan Wideman launched a pivotal three-run shot in the sixth and Ethan Lizama capped it off with a solo bomb in the eighth. Jack Bennett earned the win, tossing 5.0 quality innings, to improve to 7-1.
Â
Lizama played the hero in the first round with a trio of clutch hits. The Guam native had a three-RBI, bases-clearing double to bring WKU within one in the sixth before later tying the game with a solo home run in the eighth. He doubled home the game-winning run in extra innings to give the Tops a 7-6 win over #7 New Mexico State.
Â
It was Carlos Vasquez who got it done for WKU in the second round as he walked off the #6 Panthers with a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth. The Hilltoppers rallied back from a five-run deficit to take the lead in the seventh on a Camden Ross two-RBI, pinch-hit triple before the game-winner from Vasquez.
 Â
This will be the 14th all-time meeting between the Hilltoppers and Jax State. The Gamecocks took two of three against WKU in the last weekend of CUSA play prior to the conference tournament.Â
