ABOUT THE TOPS
- WKU improved to 73-32 all-time in season openers, including 1-1 in season-opening games under Mahurin Family Foundation Head Coach Hank Plona, with the 82-70 home win against Tennessee Tech last Monday at E.A. Diddle Arena. The Hilltoppers have now claimed wins in six of the last seven season-opening games, dating back to the 2019-2020 season.
- In Monday night's 82-70 victory over Tennessee Tech, the Hilltoppers used a balanced attack that saw five players score in double figures. Grant Newell and Teagan Moore paced the offense with 16 points each, while newcomer Bryant Selebangue posted a double-double in his debut with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Terrion Murdix added 13 points off the bench and Ryan Myers finished with 11. WKU shot 80-percent from the free-throw line (28-for-35) and out-rebounded the Golden Eagles 42-36, leading for more than 36 minutes of game time.
- With 14 points and 10 rebounds, Selebangue became the eighth Hilltopper in the last 20 years to record a double-double in his WKU debut, joining Babacar Faye (2023-24), Carson Williams (2019-20), Charles Bassey (2018-19), Willie Carmichael (2016-17), Justin Johnson (2014-15), Aaron Adeoye (2013-14) and Juan Patillo (2010-11). It also marked the 12th double-double of his Division I career and first in more than two seasons. Selebangue posted 11 double-doubles during his lone season at Tulsa in 2022-23.
- Monday marked Teagan Moore's first game action since the 2023-24 season after medically redshirting last year due to injury. The redshirt sophomore made an immediate impact in his return, scoring 16 points on 4-of-10 shooting while going 8-for-9 from the free-throw line. Moore also added nine rebounds, a steal and a block in 26 minutes.
- Monday also marked the long-awaited WKU debut for Terrion Murdix, who transferred from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi prior to the 2023-24 season but missed two years of action due to injury. The graduate guard made the most of his return, contributing 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting while adding six rebounds and a steal in 19 minutes off the bench. WKU was plus-29 in the score column when Murdix was on the floor against the Golden Eagles.
- Freshman guard Armelo Boone had four steals in Monday's win over Tennessee Tech. Boone is the first WKU freshman with four or more steals in a game since Kevin Kaspar had four on Nov. 20, 2011 against VCU. He's the first WKU freshman with four or more steals in their collegiate debut in program history.
QUOTABLE
- "There's 40 minutes and we're going to try to keep team success, playing the right way and buying into what we have established is our standard. They've all established and bought into the standard for team success and that everybody has to do it every day. I can give them the option of having an NBA-type rotation when they know they're going to play and stuff like that. But I don't think that would be good for some guys. We're just going to try to keep rewarding the guys that are succeeding, helping us win. I think we have a lot of very talented, successful players. So, if we just continue to reward team success, that motivates others to want to play, carry themselves, participate and help us be a championship level team." — Mahurin Family Foundation Head Coach Hank Plona, ahead on Monday night's game at Eastern Kentucky.
