HOW IT HAPPENED
Torri James, Tia Shelling, Trinity Rowe, Jeniffer Silva and Zsofia Telegdy were the first five on the court for the Lady Toppers. After a slow first quarter, WKU put some distance between them and Lindsey Wilson with a 9-2 run to start the second quarter. That eight-point lead was cut down to four right before halftime after a Blue Raider 6-2 run.
WKU came out blazing to start the third quarter, going on a 9-0 run fueled by five points from Torri James. That grew the Lady Topper lead out to 13. A 5-0 run midway through the quarter gave WKU its largest lead of the game. 36-20. The Blue Raiders closed out the quarter outscoring WKU 7-2 to bring the score to 38-27 going into the fourth quarter.
Lindsey Wilson hit two of their three 3-pointers for the game in the fourth quarter, cutting WKU's lead down to single digits multiple times in the frame. Both teams were dead even in the period, scoring 14 points each, to give WKU the 11-point win.
QUOTABLE
"I thought they never quit," said head coach Greg Collins. "They keep playing hard and that's the positive. Even when we made some mistakes on defense, we scrambled back and kept guarding. I think fatigue showed up later in the game. We weren't' where we would be in the first half, defensively. I don't know if that's a mental or physical fatigue. We didn't look physically tired but mentally we looked like we weren't as locked in as we were early. We have to keep working on that. I told them in the huddle after the game, 'That's why we have scrimmages and why we have exhibition games. So now we can learn from these things before we start playing the regular season next week.'"
