EL PASO – Hilltopper Track and Field has wrapped up action in the first day of the Conference USA Outdoor Championships.
The men's team proved to be strong in the day's events with Devon Rogers getting the first podium finish of the weekend for the Hilltoppers, taking second in the javelin throw. Kaison Barton added to the list, taking third in the men's shot put. Luke Stegman finished just outside the top-five, taking sixth.
On the men's performance, head coach Brent Chumbley said " We could not be happier with today's effort. Devon had a PR and huge statement to start the day for the men. Kaison and Luke answered the call with a season best finish in the shot put. Jackson Tweed added another two points in the pole vault. Brunel Desinor ran a strong 400, propelling into the finals."
For the women's squad, Chumbley added "Netanya Linares and Rachel Payne had a very strong day and we are excited for day two. Most of our women will compete tomorrow so we are looking forward to that."
"Overall, the team's support and complete effort was special today."
The first event of the day, the women's heptathlon, Linares and Payne both managed strong finishes in multiple legs of the race. Payne set a new PR in the high jump, taking first with Linares following behind. In total, the duo managed three top-five finishes in the four events of the heptathlon.
In the qualifier races, three Hilltoppers notched finishes good enough for final events on Sunday. Kameron Horton qualified in both the 100 and 110 hurdles. Brunel Desinor joined him, taking fifth in the 400, finishing in 48.57.
The Hilltoppers will be back in action Saturday morning for the second day of the championship meet. Things are slated to get underway at 10 a.m. CT.
