ST SIMON'S ISLAND, Ga. – The WKU men's golf team completed day one of The Peoples Championship in St. Simon's Island. The Tops currently sit right outside of the top-10 at 11th overall in a field that includes the likes of Central Michigan, Marshall, Bowling Green State University, and Murray State.
Senior Connery Meyer and redshirt junior Nic Hofman led the way for the red and white. Both Tops are in the top-25 as they are tied for 22nd overall. Both posted an even-71 round one.
Hofman and Meyer had great first rounds for WKU which included them putting in five and six birdies, respectively.
Luke Fuller is looking to continue moving up the board going into the weekend as he is currently tied for 56th on the board. Fuller had an impressive start for the Tops, going even on his first two holes before putting in back-to-back birdies on holes three and four. Fuller ended his opening round with a 2-over 73.
In his first showing of the spring season, Riley Grindstaff is currently tied for 64th heading into the second round. Grindstaff was consistent throughout his first round, meeting par on seven straight holes. The junior also put in three birdies on his way to a 3-over 74 first round.
Rounding out the Tops lineup for day one was Stephen Warren. Warren currently is currently tied for 122nd and is looking to capture some momentum to move up the board going into the last two rounds. Warren met par on nine of his 18 holes and played a role in the Tops' top-15 placement. Warren posted a 10-over 81 first round.
As a whole, the Tops put together great stretches across consecutive holes throughout the first day of the tourney. The red and white put in 19 birdies alone in round one.
As a team, WKU posted a 5-over 289 first round and have put themselves in a great position to move up throughout the final two rounds.
The Tops will compete in the second round bright and early tomorrow morning for an 8 A.M. start.
