Rylan Smith gave up just a lone hit in the shutout, dealing five strikeouts at the plate, as the Tops secured their sixth shutout game of the season.
WKU 9, MOREHEAD STATE 0 [5inn.]
After the Tops defense had a 1-2-3 in the opening frame, Taylor Sanders and the Hilltoppers reached the board first with an RBI double down the right field line to plate one in the bottom half.
In the second inning, WKU plated two runs off of three hits, as Sophie Weber and Addy Edgmon struck for a pair of two-out singles before Morgan Sharpe hit for a single up the middle to send the duo home for a 3-0 lead.
WKU secured the mercy-rule batting around the order with a significant six runs in the third inning. Annie White would lead off in scoring with her second double of the game, bringing in a run. Edgmon and Sharpe would later draw back-to-back bases-loaded walks to bring a 6-0 ballgame.
Later in the inning, TJ Webster would reach the base off of an Eagles fielding error to score Weber who drew a walk at the plate. The Tops picked up their final two runs of the game from another Morehead fielding error.
Now posting a 7-4 record this season, Rylan Smith worked her way through 4.0 innings, giving up only a single hit and a walk, while retiring five at the plate. Maddy Wood came in to close, earning a strikeout in the three batters faced.
