DADE CITY, Fl. – The Lady Tops have claimed their first victory of the spring season as they've won the Spring Break Shootout tournament. Junior Catie Craig was also the top individual finisher of the tournament along with fellow Lady Topper Sarah Arnold, who finished second.
Catie Craig, who is coming off of a record-breaking day one, kept her momentum going into the final round of the tournament. Craig used an even-par 71 final round to wrap up her second individual victory of the season. Her last victory came at the Jennifer Duke Invitational which the Lady Tops also won. Craig put in 13 birdies which was second in the field, along with an eagle during her record-breaking first round. This victory gave Catie the her fourth career victory, which is tied for second all-time, behind Mary Joiner who won six.
Graduate student Sarah Arnold came away with her third top-five finish of the season as she finished second. Arnold is coming off of her own record setting outing in day one as she shot a new career low 66 in the second round. Arnold's momentum continued in the final round. The Illinois native put in two birdies and met par seven times in this final round. Arnold led the overall field in birdies as she put in 15.
Sarah Arnold and Catie Craig also broke the lowest individual 54-hole score record. Sarah Arnold turned in a 204 and Catie Craig scored a 201. These scores put them in first and second in WKU history.
Cracking the top-10 is sophomore Sydney Hackett. Hackett, who was tied for 19th going into the final round, used an extremely consistent final round to put herself in the top-10. The WKU sophomore met par 10 times and put in three birdies in six holes to give herself a 1-under 70 final round.
Tying for 22nd is Averi Cline. Cline met par five times in this final round on her way to a 4-over 74 final round. Cline put in a 6-over 219 total score for the Lady Tops. This finish was Cline's fifth top-25 finish of the season.
Finishing up her tournament with a 6-over 77 final round, Addie Westbrook tied for 55th to end the tournament. Westbrook was a consistent presence for the Lady Tops, putting in a birdie on her 15th hole. Westbrook ended her tournament outing with a 13-over 226 total score.
Wrapping up her day for the red and white, Faith Martin finished tied for 60th in her spring debut. Martin was able to move up 11 spots on the board after turning in a 3-over 74 final round. Martin came away with a 15-over 228 total score and was a factor in WKU's victory.
With this victory, Head Coach Adam Gary claims his 11th tournament championship, breaking his own record. The Lady Topper coach spoke on the team's performance during this dominant victory, "This team constantly amazes me. The hard work and dedication they show each week is impressive. I'm happy to see all of the work pay off. I'm excited to see what is still in store for this group."
Coach Gary's squad broke a number of WKU records on their way to their victory. The Lady Tops posted the lowest team round score with a 271 round one. They also broke the team 36-hole and 54-hole records as they scored a 552 and 835 respectively.
The Lady Tops will travel to Chattanooga for the Chattanooga Classic. This tournament will be the final tournament before the CUSA Tournament. WKU will be competing in the Chattanooga Classic from April 7-9.
