MONTGOMERY, Texas – In their first tournament of the spring season, the WKU Golf team finished second in the Bentwater Intercollegiate.
The squad boasted three players in the top-25.
The Tops were led by graduate student Luke Fuller. Fuller had a great wire-to-wire showing for the Tops as he cemented himself in the top-10 early, which is where he remained for the duration of the tournament. Fuller finished fourth overall for WKU. His performance was capped off by a 2-under 69 final round. The Kentucky native finished with a 1-under 212 total score for the tournament.
Nic Hofman and Stephen Warren were not too far behind Fuller as they both finished tied for 17th. Warren had a very solid final round as he turned in a 3-over 74 final round.
Hofman showed his consistency throughout the tournament as he was instrumental in the Tops leading the field in birdies. The redshirt junior contributed 14, which was second in the field. Hofman carried momentum for WKU in final round, finishing with a 2-over 73.
In his first appearance for the Tops this spring, freshman Gage Doyle also had a great showing, cracking the top-50. The Texas native tied for 41st overall. Doyle finished with a 12-over 225 total score.
Senior Connery Meyer played a role for the Tops success as well also finishing within the top-50. The senior finished tied for 46th after a 7-over 78 final round.
As a team, WKU was third in total par-3's, third in par-5's, and led the entire field in total birdies with 52.
The second-place finish is a tone setter for the Tops as the spring season continues. Head Coach Austin King spoke on the success on the tournament and what to expect moving forward. "A decent start to the spring for sure but definitely have plenty to work on. Luke was really solid for the week and everyone else had good stretches of golf, just felt like we left quite a few shots out there." King continued, "We led the field in birdies which is very encouraging and a great indicator of how well these guys can play, just have some mistakes we need to clean up which we will. Looking forward to a few good weeks of prep for Sea Palms."
The Tops will continue their spring season next month as they head to St. Simons, Georgia to compete in the Sea Palms Invitational in which they finished seventh place in last season. The three-day tournament, hosted by Western Carolina will take place from March 7-9.
