MONTGOMERY, Texas. – After a 3 and a half month break, the WKU golf team returned to action for the spring, competing in the two day Bentwater Intercollegiate hosted by Rice.
The Tops concluded day one of the Bentwater Intercollegiate near the top of the leaderboard, tying for second place going into the final round.
Luke Fuller firmly planted himself near the top of the board, tying for sixth going into the final round. The graduate student posted a 1-over 143 total score on the day.
Not too far behind him is Stephen Warren who is tied for eighth after two rounds. Warren moved up three spots after shaving a stroke off his score, finishing with a 3-over 145 heading into Tuesday.
Nic Hofman is also just outside of the top-10, finishing tied for 12th. Hofman finished with a 4-over 176 on the day. Compounding on his consistency, Hofman is also second in the field in total birdies with 10 through two rounds.
Senior Connery Meyer finished the day in the top-30 as well, finishing tied for 25th heading into the final day. The Georgia native finished round one with a 5-over 76, but was able to get himself 1-under par by the conclusion of the second round and finished 1-over 72 in that round.
In his first showing of the spring season, freshman Gage Doyle is also tied for 25th on the board after posting a 1-over 72 in the second round. Doyle had a big jump in his position as he moved up 16 spots on the board in the second round.
The Tops had a great showing wire-to-wire. At the conclusion of the first round, the squad was tied for fourth after shooting a 294. The Tops were then able to able to climb up to second following a strong second round on the back of 29 birdies on the day.
The team put themselves in great position throughout the day and currently hold an 11-over 597 total score.The Tops trail fellow CUSA member Sam Houston by five strokes for first place.
The team currently leads in field in par 3's, birdies, and are second in par 5's.
The Tops will play their final round of the tournament tomorrow morning. The time is yet to be announced.
