EVANSVILLE, Ind. – WKU Women's Tennis fell to Austin Peay 6-1 and beat Southern Indiana 6-1 on Saturday at the Evansville Tennis Center.
The Lady Toppers move to 3-4 with the two results.
Sofia Blanco defeated Austin Peay's Asia Fontana 7-6 (7-2), 3-6, 10-7 to claim WKU's lone point in the opening match of Saturday's doubleheader. Blanco moved to 6-0 on the season with the victory, tying the best individual start in singles play for a Lady Topper under Head Coach Greg Davis.
"Fought until the end against a very good APSU team," WKU Head Coach Greg Davis said. "Great win by Sofia Blanco!"
The Lady Toppers bounced back to claim a 6-1 victory over Southern Indiana in the second match of the day.
Paola Cortez, Rachel Hermanova, Anna-Marie Kopecka, Sunskrithi Damera, and Samantha Martinez each claimed singles victories against the Screaming Eagles after the Lady Toppers claimed the doubles point in the match.
"Good win over a very much improved USI team," Davis said. "It was great to see one doubles and Samantha play well at 6 singles."
Against USI in doubles, Blanco and Martinez defeated Lauren Rowe and Anais Negrail 6-0 and Damera and Sayda Hernandez defeated Madison Windham and Rachel McCorkle 6-3 to claim the point.
In singles against the Screaming Eagles, Cortez defeated McCorkle 6-2, 6-2; Hermanova defeated Rowe 6-1, 6-2; Kopecka defeated Anais Negrail 6-3, 6-1; Damera defeated Sofia Davidoff 6-4, 7-6 (7-3); and Martinez defeated Abby Myers 6-1, 6-0.
WKU is next scheduled to travel to Murray State for a match on Saturday, Feb. 17.
