BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – After defeating Northern Kentucky in the home opener on Friday, WKU Women's Tennis will be back home at the Michael O. Buchanan Park Indoor Tennis Facility on Sunday to take on Western Carolina at 1:30 p.m. CT.
"I thought we played well," WKU Head Coach Greg Davis said after Friday's match. "It was a big improvement intensity-wise from our first match and I thought we competed well on every court – one through three doubles, which is what we talked about, and one through six singles.
"Now we've got to kind of try to raise that level a little bit more because Sunday's a very difficult match. Western Carolina came in here last year and beat us 4-3. Very good team, and just like us, they've got most all of their players back from last year when they were a very young and talented team. We're going to have our hands full. We hope a lot of people in the community come out on Sunday and watch the match at 1:30 p.m."
The Lady Toppers are 1-1 after Friday's 7-0 sweep of NKU, and will face a Western Carolina team that also enters Sunday's match with a 1-1 mark this season.
WKU has claimed the doubles point in both matches played so far this season, led by the 2-0 record in doubles from the duo of Sofia Blanco and Samantha Matinez. Blanco and Anna-Marie Kopecka both own 2-0 records in singles matches this season.
WKU fell 4-3 last season to the Catamounts in the first meeting between the two programs.
"Have the same mentality as (Friday)," Blanco said. "We also lost against them last year, really close, 4-3. New year, new match. We're playing on our courts, so just keep being hungry, humble, and being consistent and aggressive on the court."
