BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – WKU Women's Tennis will welcome Northern Kentucky for the home opener on Friday at 1 p.m. CT at the Michael O. Buchanan Park Indoor Tennis Facility.
"We know it's not going to be easy, but we're going to give it everything," WKU redshirt senior Paola Cortez said. "We're going to be hungry for winning, because that's what it's all about."
The match is the first for the Lady Toppers (0-1) since falling 4-3 at Eastern Kentucky on Jan. 14 – last weekend's scheduled matches against Bellarmine and Lipscomb were postponed due to winter weather.
WKU and NKU have met each of the previous five seasons, and Friday's match will mark the ninth all-time meeting between the two programs. The Norse lead the series 5-3, but the two teams have split the last two meetings. NKU edged WKU last year 4-3. Cortez, Rachel Hermanova, and Sunskrithi Damera each claimed singles victories in the previous meeting, while the duo of Samantha Martinez and Mariana Zegada won their doubles match.
NKU also enters Friday's meeting with an 0-1 record after falling at Xavier 7-0 on Jan. 19.
The Lady Toppers went 7-5 at home last season and are 19-9 at home over the past two campaigns.
WKU will follow Friday's match with a 1:30 p.m. home contest against Western Carolina on Sunday. Both matches will feature a free WKU Women's Tennis 2024 schedule poster giveaway promotion.
"I think (it'll take) just a winning mentality," Martinez said. "We're hungry, we want to win, and (we need to do) what we know that we're capable of doing, do what we're doing in practice, and believe in ourselves."
