EL PASO, Texas – Hilltopper Basketball fell to UTEP, 93-87, on Saturday night at Don Haskins Center in El Paso, Texas. WKU drops to 13-6 overall for the season and 2-3 in Conference USA play with the loss.
Saturday's game facing the Miners saw nine lead changes and 15 ties. The Hilltoppers' time with the lead was 10:33 to UTEP's 22:29.
WKU fell behind, 18-11, at the 12:42 mark, before scoring eight unanswered points to reclaim a 19-11 lead. Don McHenry's floating jumper earned the Tops the lead for the first time since the 18-minute mark.
The teams traded leads for the remainder of the second half. After a three-pointer by Tyrone Marshall Jr. evened the count at 40-40, a last-second jumper by UTEP put the Miners ahead by two, 42-40, at the half.
The second half saw four lead changes and 11 ties in total. Rodney Howard and Teagan Moore led the way for WKU in the second period, scoring 12 and 10 respectively to give the Tops a lift.
UTEP reclaimed the lead, 76-75, at the 4:29 mark, and carried the momentum throughout the remainder of the game. The Miners outscored the Tops 17-12 in the final four minutes of play and secured the win over WKU by a 93-87 final count.
McHenry led the Tops' scoring effort, finishing with 18 points to go with five assists, three rebounds, one block and one steal. Enoch Kalambay grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. WKU found a total of 40 points from its bench while limiting UTEP to just 17.
WKU returns home to host FIU on Thursday, Jan. 25 at 7 p.m. CT. ESPN+ will broadcast the matchup against the Panthers live from E.A. Diddle Arena in Bowling Green, Ky.
