RICHMOND, Ky. – WKU Women's Tennis was unable to come away with a road victory in the season opener and fell to host Eastern Kentucky 4-3 on Sunday at the Greg Adams Tennis Center.
"Congrats to EKU," WKU Head Coach Greg Davis said. "Their crowd and effort overwhelmed us in our opening match. It was great to see Anna(-Marie Kopecka) and Sofia (Blanco) start off with great wins in singles and doubles."
The Lady Toppers (0-1) started off the opening match by taking the doubles point with victories in the No. 1 and 2 positions. Blanco and Samantha Martinez defeated EKU's (1-0) Marilou Cote and Emmeline Polevoi 6-3, while Paola Cortez and Kopecka defeated Masha Fedenko and Sasha Parkhomenko 7-6 (7-2). Rachel Hermanova and Sayda Hernandez fell in the No. 3 position to Madison Hill and Mariia Triska 6-2.
WKU claimed singles victories in the No. 5 and 6 positions from Kopecka and Blanco. Blanco defeated Izem Elif Olcer by retirement and Kopecka defeated Mariia Triska 6-1, 6-2.
Also in singles, Cortez fell to Fedenko 6-1, 6-2; Hermanova fell to Parkhomenko 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-4); Hernandez fell to Cote 7-6 (9-7), 6-4; and Sunskrithi Damera fell to Polevoi 6-2, 6-4.
WKU will be back in action on Friday, Jan. 19 for its home opener against Bellarmine. The match is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
