OXFORD, Ohio — WKU women's basketball got back into the win column on Saturday afternoon in Oxford, Ohio with a 63-43 win against Miami (Ohio). After a low-scoring first half, the Lady Toppers surged offensively, scoring 39 points in the third quarter and 51 points in the second half.
Teresa Faustino led WKU in scoring for the second time this season, pouring in 17 points which tied her career high. Faustino connected on a career high five 3-pointers. Acacia Hayes added 13 points, her fourth straight game in double figures. Odeth Betancourt had a season-high 11 points and tied her season high with six rebounds. Alexis Mead dished out six assists, the third time this season the junior has had six helpers.
Saturday's win was the 26th that a Greg Collins' coached team has come back from a halftime deficit to win a game. The Lady Toppers are 33-6 under Collins when holding a team below 60 points. It was Collins' 90th win as head coach at WKU.
It was a sluggish first half on the offensive end for both teams. WKU shot just 9.1 percent from the field in the first quarter and Miami shot 16.7 percent from the floor. At the end of the first quarter, the RedHawks were ahead 6-5. Miami stretched that lead in the second quarter, outscoring WKU 14-7 in the frame to take a 20-12 lead at halftime.
The two teams started the third quarter trading baskets, but at the 7:58 mark WKU started a 15-0 run that put WKU ahead by eight. Miami stopped the run with a pair of free throws. From there, WKU outscored the RedHawks 22-6 for the remainder of the quarter to take a 51-31 lead into the final period.
The Lady Toppers were a blazing 75.0 percent from the field in the third quarter, going 15-of-20 and were 7-of-9 (77.8 percent) from beyond the arc.
Both teams scored 12 points each in the fourth quarter to give WKU a 63-43 win.
WKU improves to 7-0 against Miami all-time, including a 4-0 record against the RedHawks in Oxford.
