"It's good to get out early and learn what we need to work on," notes head coach Adam Gary. "We've had success here in the past with a team win and some individual runner-up finishes. I'm looking forward to getting back to a familiar golf course where we were able to get a lot of experience last year with our players."
"It's a great tournament to start at," said senior Sarah Arnold. "I love the course. In years past, our whole team has pretty much played pretty good in the tournament. I'm really excited going into it. I think we're going to do well there."
WKU's history at the USA Intercollegiate is well documented by the Lady Topper record book. In the five years opening at the tournament, WKU has placed in the top five as a team on three occasions, including a win in 2020.
Multiple of the program's top 10 individual rounds have come out of the USA Intercollegiate, including Arnold who had her collegiate debut in Mobile. Former Lady Topper Mary Joiner won the event by posting program-record scores back in 2018.
The 13-team field will be playing the par-72, 6,110-yard RTJ – Magnolia Grove Course. The tournament features UAB, Little Rock, Arkansas State, Georgia State, Houston Baptist, Louisiana Monroe, Memphis, Middle Tennessee, UT Arlington, Southern Miss, Troy, WKU and host South Alabama.
WKU's lineup is a mix of young and old to start the season. Freshman Sydney Hackett is going to make her collegiate debut by leading off the Lady Toppers. She came to The Hill as WKU's highest-ranked recruit in program history.
Arnold follows Hackett in the No. 2 spot and she is joined by junior Rachel Rich who fills in the third. Another freshman is added in the lineup for her debut as Averi Cline qualified in to the fourth spot for WKU. The lineup is finished out by fifth-year senior Kenlie Barrett.
"Even though we've added three new freshmen this year, they're making an immediate impact," added Gary. "We've got Sydney Hackett from Virginia in the number one spot and then Averi Cline from Georgia in the number four spot. We're going to have a couple new players, but I think it's going to be fin. With the experience we had last year, they'll be able to fill them in on the missing pieces. I'm looking forward to it, I think we're going to have a good showing."
The Lady Toppers are also taking two individuals in sophomore Catie Craig and junior Addie Westbrook.
