BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – WKU Baseball opened its series against UAB with a 7-3 win on Friday night at Nick Denes Field.
The Hilltoppers were spurred by an 8.0-inning outing by Devyn Terbrak and two-homer performance from Matthew Meyer to earn the win in their first of three against the Blazers.
"I thought the guys competed really well today in the box and put some runs on the board," said head coach John Pawlowski. "We were extremely aggressive. I told them, 'Hey, even if we make mistakes, let's be very aggressive with it – especially on the bases – let's just go for it.' I thought they played really well."
Terbrak earned the starting nod for WKU, allowing just three runs while recording nine strikeouts in 8.0 innings of action. Mason Vinyard then closed out the final frame while not allowing a hit and striking out two batters.
At the plate, the Hilltoppers racked up 12 hits and three walks, with five players producing multi-hit performances. Ty Batusich, Ty Crittenberger, Tristin Garcia, Aidan Gilroy and Meyer all contributed two hits apiece, with Meyer collecting two home runs and four RBI in the contest.
SCORING SUMMARY
UAB opened the scoring in the top of the first, using an RBI single to right field to take an early 1-0 lead.
The Hilltoppers answered back in the bottom of the frame, using RBI singles by Batusich and Brian McAuliffe and an error by the Blazers to jump ahead 3-1.
WKU tacked on another run in the second inning, with a solo shot by Meyer making it 4-1.
UAB used runs in the fifth and sixth innings to pull within 4-3, but a three-run homer by Meyer in the bottom of the sixth helped close things out, giving the Hilltoppers a 7-3 lead and the eventual victory.
