BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – WKU Track & Field's Clint Sherman and Keegan Barnette broke facility records for the men's 5k and 3,000-meter steeplechase, respectively, at UAB's Green and Gold Invite on Friday and Saturday. Throughout the meet, five Hilltoppers claimed six different event titles while the squad picked up 15 top-five finishes in total.
Senior distance runner Sherman led WKU with two different event titles, claiming first in the 1500-meter by just 19 one-hundredths of a second over fellow Hilltopper Dedrick Troxell. Sherman also set a new facility record in the 5k with a win and time of 14:56.01. Everyone else in the 5k field was behind Sherman by 25 seconds or more.
Freshman runner Barnette won the 3k steeplechase race with a facility record and personal best time of 9:33.51. He logged the new PR by besting his time from the Hilltopper Relays by 15 seconds and beating the remainder of the field by 14 seconds.
Freshman sprinter Queen Couch beat the largest field today, claiming the women's 100-meter dash with a time of 11.99, a new personal best. She defeated a field of 35 other runners after breaking the 12-second barrier.
In the women's 5k, Savannah Heckman won the race and Lucy Rutherford finished in second. Rutherford improved her personal best by 14 seconds while Heckman defeated everyone in the field by 16 seconds after logging a time of 16:55.40.
Over in the throws circle, Ajla Basic picked up her second consecutive win in the women's hammer throw with a mark of 54.67 meters.
WKU will take a weekend off before heading east to Lexington and the Kentucky Invitational on Friday, April 22 and Saturday, April 23.
