WKU enters the weekend matchup with a 31-9 overall record, coming off of a midweek upset over No. 5 Alabama in front of a record crowd at the WKU Softball Complex. Southern Miss dropped a one-run game to Mississippi State, 5-4, in a Wednesday midweek game.
Across the season, USM has picked up a pair of SEC wins itself, taking down No. 4 Florida, 5-4, on March 2 followed by a 3-0 win over Mississippi State on April 6.
Last weekend, the Hilltoppers picked up two wins against Marshall to move to 13-5 in conference play for the top mark across the league. Southern Miss dropped a 2-1 series at UTSA.
The Hilltoppers and Golden Eagles have common opponents in Saint Louis, Samford, UAB, Charlotte and UTEP this season. The Tops and Golden Eagles won both of their games against Saint Louis. Southern Miss lost all of their games against Samford and UAB, while WKU came on top for both games against Samford and took the series 2-1 against UAB in Birmingham. Both sides swept UTEP, and took two of three games against Charlotte.
WKU is in first place in the East Division for Conference USA, sitting at an overall record of 13-5 in conference play. Southern Miss sits fifth in the West Division with an overall conference record of 7-11. The Golden Eagles own a record of 27-19 on the season.
