MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – WKU Track & Field freshman Rory O'Connor led the squad on Friday, the first day of competition for the Hilltoppers at the Conference USA Championships, as she finished seventh in the 10k and scores two points for the women's side.
WKU had five top-10 finishes across three events. While O'Connor scored points, Savannah Heckman finished ninth and Carley Maskos placed 17th in the 10,000-meter race. On the men's side, the distance crew was led by Clint Sherman in ninth followed by Will Perrone in 14th and Miles Huff in 17th. This was the first time any of the six runners had ever competed in a track 10k.
The throwers recorded two PRs in the hammer throw on Friday afternoon. Mary Claire Redden threw a PR on the women's side at 41.49m while freshman Jake Robinson threw a personal best of 50.32m, almost four whole meters than his previous best.
Brett Brannon finished ninth after throwing in the finals while John Elam, Robinson and Kaison Barton just narrowly missed the finals at 10th, 11th and 13th.
On Saturday, the Red and White will start the day with women's pole vault and men's discus at 3:30 p.m. On the track, WKU will start with the men's 1500-meter prelims at 3:45. The Hilltoppers will also compete in the women's 100, 200 and steeplechase and the men's 100, 200, 400 and 800 on Saturday. The steeplechase on Saturday evening is considered a final race while all others are preliminary.
