JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – WKU Women's Golf was led wire-to-wire by sophomore Sarah Arnold as the team finished seventh at the UNF Collegiate on Tuesday. The Lady Toppers improved by 10 strokes from the second to final round to shoot 6-over 294. WKU's score was one of the top five team scores of the day.
"I'm really proud of the way the team fought back today after yesterday's slow start," said head coach Adam Gary on the performance. "A few holes really cost us this week, but I feel like we are close to playing some really good golf. I think the best is yet to come for this team."
Arnold paced the Lady Toppers on Tuesday after firing a 3-under 69 in the final round at the par-72, 5,926-yard Jacksonville Golf and Country Club. The 18-hole score tied with two other individuals for the lowest score of the entire event, a total of 279 rounds played by 93 individuals in the field.
The St. Charles, Ill., native closed out her round with two birdies and four pars on her final six holes, moving up 12 spots to tie for sixth at 3-over 219.
"Sarah did a great job this week," added Gary. "Fighting through the tough windy conditions to get a sixth-place finish was a great accomplishment."
Senior captain Megan Clarke was just behind Arnold on Tuesday as she advanced 23 spots on the leaderboard by carding a 2-under 70. She tied for 17th after notching five birdies in the final round to finish at 9-over 225.
Counting as the third score for WKU was senior Olivia Reed. She posted a final-round, 5-over 77 to keep the Lady Tops in seventh. She tied for 62nd overall.
Both graduate senior Mary Joiner and freshman Rachel Rich turned in 6-over 78's on Tuesday for their final round scores. Joiner tied for 33rd while Rich tied for 42nd.
Redshirt senior Teri Doss improved her score by six shots to shoot 1-over 73 in the final round. She tied for 54th, competing as an individual. Freshman Addie Westbrook tied for 79th after shooting 5-over 77 on Tuesday.
WKU will stay on the road and host its annual Spring Break Shootout on Monday and Tuesday at the Lake Jovita Country Club in Dade City, Fla.
