Hilltoppers Host Old Dominion with Division Title at Stake

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — WKU Hilltopper Basketball will vie for a championship at home this weekend in a series against Old Dominion, starting at 7 p.m. CT Friday at E.A. Diddle Arena. Both games of the series will stream on CBS Sports Network on Facebook Watch.

The Hilltoppers have won eight straight Conference USA games. With a win Friday, they can clinch the East Division title. With a win and a North Texas loss, they can clinch the best overall record in the league.

WKU is 20-21 all-time against Old Dominion, including 16-5 at home. Rick Stansbury is 5-5 against the Monarchs.

• WKU's last regular-season conference championship came in the Sun Belt Conference in 2009.

• WKU has six top-110 NET wins so far this year over Alabama (7), Memphis (59), Louisiana Tech (72), Marshall twice (76) and Rhode Island (104). Four of its losses were vs. top-90 programs: at Houston (4), vs. West Virginia (13) on a neutral court, at Louisville (47) and at home against Louisiana Tech (72).

• Charles Bassey has been named to the Wooden Award Late Season Top 20 Watch List for National Player of the Year. He's also on the Naismith Trophy and Lute Olson National POY watch lists, a Naismith Defensive Player of the Year semifinalist and a Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year top-five finalist.

• As of Wednesday, Charles Bassey is tied for second in the nation in dunks (58), as well as third in blocks per game (3.1), rebounds per game (11.8) and double-doubles (14).

• After shooting just 30.4% from 3-point range in non-conference games and allowing opponents to shoot 41.4%, the Hilltoppers lead C-USA in 3-point percentage in league play at 37.9% and rank second in 3-point defense in conference action at 31.4%.

• Taveion Hollingsworth is averaging 16.2 points per game and shooting 51.6% from the field over the last five games after averaging 9.5 points and shooting 36.4% from the floor in the four games prior.

LAST GAME AGAINST OLD DOMINION: JANUARY 16, 2020

Taveion Hollingsworth scored WKU's last nine points in the final 38 seconds of its matchup with Old Dominion, bringing the Hilltoppers back from an eight-point deficit with 1:20 remaining for a 71-69 win at E.A. Diddle Arena.

WKU found itself down 64-52 with 3:28 to play, but outscored Old Dominion 19-5 the rest of the way in a rematch of last season's C-USA Tournament title game.

The final 40 seconds belonged to Hollingsworth, who hit five free throws, a tough mid-range jumper, and the game-winning layup with three seconds to play. Hollingsworth finished with a game-high 23 points, netting 7 of 12 shots from the field and 8 of 8 free throws.
