BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – WKU Baseball dropped its seven-inning doubleheader to Charlotte on Saturday afternoon at Nick Denes Field.
The Hilltoppers fell in game one, 6-0, before coming up short in a tightly contested extra-inning game two, 5-4.
"It comes down to execution," said head coach John Pawlowski. "You have to be able to execute. I thought that Charlotte did a great job - when they needed to, they executed the plays. We had a couple breakdowns there, and to me that was the difference in the ball games today."
Sean Bergeron earned the start in game one of today's doubleheader, allowing just one earned run while striking out seven in 5.1 frames. Collin Lollar and Wil Moritz made relief appearances in the contest, with the duo combining to allow two earned runs while striking out a pair in 1.2 innings of action.
At the plate, the Hilltoppers tallied four hits, with Ty Crittenberger leading the way with a 2-for-2 performance.
Devyn Terbrak recorded the start in the backend of today's doubleheader, recording a no decision while allowing two earned runs to go along with two strikeouts in 5.1 frames. Mason Vinyard entered the game in the sixth to relieve Terbrak, allowing one run (unearned) while tallying four strikeouts in 2.2 innings of action.
Offensively, the Hilltoppers racked up eight hits, with Matthew Meyer leading the squad with a 2-for-4 performance while adding an RBI and run.
SCORING SUMMARY (GAME ONE)
Charlotte opened the scoring in the third inning with a two-RBI double down the left field line.
The 49ers tacked on another run in the fifth frame with a sac fly to left field.
Charlotte extended its lead in the sixth, using an RBI-double and two-run homer to take a 6-0 advantage it would never relinquish.
SCORING SUMMARY (GAME TWO)
Charlotte got on the board in the first frame after scoring on a Hilltopper error.
WKU answered back in the bottom of the inning, with an RBI-single by Davis Sims and sac fly by Kevin Lambert giving the squad a 2-1 lead.
The 49ers regained their lead in the top of the sixth, using a two-RBI triple and RBI-bunt to pull ahead 4-2.
The Hilltoppers again answered back in the bottom of the frame, tying the game at four apiece following RBI-singles by Eric Riffe and Meyer.
Charlotte would then add one run in the eighth off an RBI-triple down the right field line, leading to the eventual 5-4 win for the 49ers.
