"I think the way the season has gone so far, I'm happy with what we've done," said Director of Cross Country/Track & Field Brent Chumbley. "We've had a lot of really good individual performances, so I think we can score well at the meet."
WKU has two runners named as 'Performers to Watch For' by the league. Graduate senior sprinter Marlowe Mosley leads C-USA in the 400-meter following back-to-back victories in the event at the Hilltoppers' latest meets. Sophomore sprinter Alexis Williams was also added to the watch list for both the 60 and 200-meter races. Williams currently holds the conference's second-best time in the 60 and best time in the 200.
Mosley as well as senior Dartez Hamlin are tied for the fourth-best 200-meter time in the league, having clocked a 21.67 at the Jaguar Invitational 12 days ago. Freshman Casey Buchanan holds the third time in the 800-meter at 1:55.20 while Dedrick Troxell holds the fifth-best conference time in the mile. Senior Savannah Heckman has the third-best time in the women's 5000-meter, as well.
In the men's throwing group, freshman Kaison Barton has the third-best mark in shot put followed by teammate John Elam in fifth. WKU holds four of the top seven marks in weight throw and all four of those Hilltoppers will be competing in the event this weekend.
At the 2020 C-USA Indoor Championships, then-junior Hamlin took home first place in the men's 200-meter. Troxell added points for the men in the 1 mile while Williams scored points on the women's side in the 200 and current sophomore Grace Turner recorded points in pole vault.
"We've got some really good quality kids," Chumbley added. "I expect many more podium finishes this year than we had last year. We're looking forward to this weekend."
WKU will start the weekend with sophomore Samyzia Sears competing in the pentathlon beginning at 9:15 a.m. on Saturday morning. Men's pole vault will kick off the field events at 1 p.m. while many running event trials will start at 3 p.m. and run through 7:40 p.m. All running events will have a trial and finals excluding the 3,000 (Sunday), 5,000 (Saturday) and DMR (Saturday). Field events that compete on Saturday include both men's and women's pole vault and weight throw.
The Hilltoppers will start competition on Sunday morning at 10 a.m. beginning with the men's shot put. Running events will start at noon with the mile and conclude with the 4x400 relays at 2:40 p.m. The awards presentation is scheduled for 3:15 p.m.
