MOBILE, Ala. – Sophomore Luke Fuller fired a career-best 3-under 69 on Tuesday to lead WKU Men's Golf in the final round of the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate. The 18-hole score is the best by any Hilltopper so far in the 2020-21 season.
WKU finished the tournament with its best team score of the event at 4-over 292, with two Hilltoppers shooting under par. The Red and White finished at 17-over 881 for the 54-hole Intercollegiate, good for 10th as a team at the par-72, 7,212-yard Magnolia Grove Crossings Course.
"I'm really proud of how hard our guys have been working so far this spring," head coach Chan Metts said on the performance. "I have tried to make practice as difficult as I can, since we've been back in January, and they have been grinding really hard and handling it well. It was nice to see that hard work pay off some this week."
Fuller climbed 16 spots on the individual leaderboard after shooting the 3-under score. The Mount Sterling, Ky., native carded six birdies in his final round and tied for 31st overall.
Freshman Connery Meyer joined Fuller in shooting under-par for the final round of the Intercollegiate. The Marietta, Ga., native improved by nine shots from his second round to shoot 1-under 71. He finished tied for 53rd at 7-over 223 after carding three birdies in his final eight holes.
Senior Caleb O'Toole tied with Meyer after shooting 6-over 78 on Tuesday. Finishing just behind the pair, tied for 61st, was graduate senior Christian Tooley. He finished with a final-round, 3-over 74 to score 9-over 225 for his 54-hole total.
Competing in his first tournament as a Hilltopper, Aaron Pha finished 84th as an individual after turning in a 9-over 81 for his final round. Senior Tom Bevington inadvertently signed for a wrong score card for the final round and was disqualified.
"This week was a step in the right direction for us," Metts added. "It's not even close to where we expect to be, but it is improvement from the fall. We were really close to putting together a great under-par round today, and that shows the potential we have, but it means nothing if we don't keep improving. My message to the team has been that our goal is to outwork everybody, and that is what we will continue to do."
WKU will take a few weeks break before traveling to the Sea Palms Invitational hosted by Western Carolina on March 4-6.
