Grindstaff in Contention for Battle at Black Creek Title

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – In his fifth-ever college event, WKU Hilltopper Golf freshman Riley Grindstaff is in contention for an individual title at Chattanooga's Battle at Black Creek.

Through 36 holes on Monday, Grindstaff is at 5-under 139 after posting a 1-under 71 and 3-under 69. In the two rounds, he recorded 10 birdies, including seven on the back nine of the par-72, 7,204-yard course.

Grindstaff is tied with two golfers for third and is just two strokes back from two others in first place. The Franklin, Tenn., native is ahead of two top-100 golfers in the field.

Fifth-year senior Caleb O'Toole is in his first start of the season in Chattanooga and posted a 1-under 71 followed by a 2-over 74. He is tied for 28th after the 36-hole day and is just two shots back from a top-20 finish.

Both freshman Stephen Warren and junior Luke Fuller posted solid scores on Monday as Warren shot an even-par 72 in the first round and Fuller carded a 1-over 73 in the second. The duo is tied for 57th on the leaderboard with 5-over 149's on the entire day. Freshman Elliott Pope shot 9-over 81 and 14-over 86.

As a team, the Hilltoppers shot 1-over 289 in the first round and 6-over 293 in the second. WKU is in 11th on the leaderboard and will tee off for the final round on Tuesday morning.
