Tops Begin Rivalry Series with Marshall at Home Friday

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — WKU Hilltopper Basketball begins a home-and-home series with league rival Marshall at 4 p.m. CT Friday at E.A. Diddle Arena. The game will air on CBS Sports Network.

The Hilltoppers have split their first two conference series, most recently dropping a home game Saturday to Louisiana Tech after a win the night before. Marshall did not play last week because of COVID-19 issues, but split its opening series with Louisiana Tech.

WKU is 18-12 all-time against Marshall, including 10-2 in Diddle Arena. WKU has won three straight in the series. Rick Stansbury is 5-4 against the Thundering Herd.

• WKU is 4-0 in games decided by three points or less this season. 10 of the Hilltoppers' 13 games have been decided by six points or less.

• WKU has three top-110 NET wins so far this season over Alabama (24), Rhode Island (76) and Memphis (106). Two of its losses came vs. West Virginia (27) on a neutral court and at Louisville (29). The Hilltoppers' NET non-conference strength of schedule is ranked 23rd in the nation.

• As of Wednesday, Charles Bassey led the nation in dunks (33) and total rebounds (141), and ranks second in double-doubles (8), fourth in total blocks (39) and rebounds per game (11.8), fifth in blocked shots per game (3.3) and ninth in defensive rebounds per game (8.6). Only 86 programs in the nation have more blocks as a team than Bassey by himself.

• As of Wednesday, the Hilltoppers rank seventh in the country in free throws made (216) and eighth in free-throw percentage (79.7%). Taveion Hollingsworth is 13th nationally with 62 made free throws.

• Last week, Taveion Hollingsworth passed Clem Haskins and moved into a tie with Bobby Rascoe for 11th on WKU's scoring list with 1,687 career points. He needs 29 points to pass Justin Johnson for 10th.

• After making 8 of 29 3-pointers (27.6%) in WKU's first five games, Luke Frampton has made 19 of 40 long-range shots (47.5%) in the Hilltoppers' last eight games.

LAST GAME AGAINST MARSHALL: JANUARY 25, 2020

WKU used a balanced effort to complete a rivalry sweep.

The Hilltoppers had six players in double figures and fought off Marshall down the stretch, notching a 91-84 home victory at E.A. Diddle Arena.

It was the second win over the Thundering Herd in a span of four days. WKU got a 64-60 comeback win at Marshall on Wednesday, then finished the job Saturday in front of a crowd of 6,270 in a sold-out Diddle Arena.

Junior guard Taveion Hollingsworth led WKU's balanced scoring with 18 points and tied his career high with six assists.

Redshirt senior guard/forward Jared Savage had 16 points, seven rebounds and three assists, and freshman guard Jordan Rawls tallied 15 points with three made 3-pointers.
