BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — WKU Hilltopper Basketball signee Isaiah Cozart was named Gatorade Kentucky Boys Basketball Player of the Year on Friday, becoming the program's second winner of the honor in the last three years.
Â
Cozart, a 6-foot-8 forward out of Madison Central High School in Richmond, Ky., joins current WKU sophomore guard Tavieon Hollingsworth (2017) as recent winners of the award.
Â
Before Cozart and Hollingsworth, the most recent winner of the award to play for WKU was Steffphon Pettigrew in 2007.
Â
The award was established in 1985 to recognize high school student-athletes for their athletic excellence, academic achievement and exemplary character.
Â
Cozart averaged 20 points, 12.2 rebounds, 5.8 blocks and one assist per game as a senior this season, leading Madison Central to the 11th Region Tournament quarterfinals.
Â
He was named the 11th Region Player of the Year, a two-time First Team All-State selection and was a finalist for Kentucky Mr. Basketball.
Â
Cozart finished his prep career with 1,575 points, 1,268 rebounds and a state-record 716 blocked shots.
Â
The son of a pastor, Cozart has volunteered locally as a youth basketball coach and he has donated his time to multiple community service initiatives through his church youth group.
Â
Cozart has maintained a weighted 3.23 GPA in the classroom and represents one of the state's top academic candidates in meeting the Gatorade award's broad criteria.
