DADE CITY, Fla. — WKU Lady Topper Golf broke its program record for 54-hole team score by an impressive 11 strokes Tuesday, finishing second on a scorecard playoff in its own Spring Break Shootout.
The Lady Toppers tied with co-host Florida Gulf Coast with 5-over 857 totals, but FGCU claimed the championship on a fifth-player tiebreaker. Even that battle between the fifth players had to go to its own individual tiebreaker.
WKU's 857 (280-293-284) tally surpassed its previous record of 868 set in the first event of this season, the USA Intercollegiate. The record before this season was 878.
The Lady Toppers set new program records for 18 and 36 holes Monday.
"I'm really proud of how the team performed this week," WKU head coach Adam Gary said. "It's awesome to set new records and personal bests. It's a shame we came up short in a playoff, but I think the team will take a lot of positives away from this week."
All five WKU golfers in team competition finished in the top 20.
Junior Bailey Tyree led WKU with her best performance to date, finishing third with a career-low, 1-under 212 (68-73-71) total.
Tyree's 212 is tied for the third-lowest 54-hole individual score in Lady Topper history. She and freshman teammate Lizzie Loy tied for the tournament lead in par-3 scoring.
"It felt really good to go out and play well," Tyree said. "It stings to lose such a close tournament, but it shows how far this team has come and how much potential we still have. I'm excited to see where the rest of the season takes us and all the things that we can do."
Sophomore Megan Clarke finished one shot behind Tyree, tying for fourth with an even-par 213 (69-73-71) tally. It's Clarke's third top-10 result in the last four outings.
Loy also had the best performance of her young career, tying for 12th with a career-low 217 (71-76-70). Junior Abigail Smee tied for 14th at 218 (72-74-72) and led the event in par-5 scoring.
Junior Mary Joiner tied for 18th at 220 (72-73-75). Sophomore Caroline Cavin wrapped up at 233 competing as an individual.
Florida Gulf Coast's Ailsa Clark won the individual title with a 7-under 206 mark.
The Lady Toppers return to the course at the Memphis Women's Intercollegiate on April 1-2 in Germantown, Tenn.
