Lady Tops, Joiner to Defend Titles at Own Spring Break Shootout

DADE CITY, Fla. — Mary Joiner and WKU Lady Topper Golf will both look to defend their championships this week as they host their own event in Florida, the Spring Break Shootout.

This is the third straight year the Lady Toppers have held the event at the par-71, 6,056-yard Lake Jovita Golf Club. They're co-hosting the event with Florida Gulf Coast.

WKU won the team crown last season by a commanding 24 strokes over second-place Jacksonville. The junior Joiner shot a 4-under 212 to take individual medalist honors, eight shots ahead of second-place teammate Georgina Blackman.

The Lady Toppers had three individuals in the top five and all five in the top 20 a year ago. Their team score of 880 was the third-best in program history, while Joiner's 212 tied for the program's second-best individual 54-hole score.

"We are looking forward to having 15 teams compete this year," WKU head coach Adam Gary said. "The weather is amazing, and the course is in great shape. It's been helpful to be able to practice all week with the team to get ready. It's exciting to defend as champions and for Mary to defend as well. We're ready for the tournament to start."

Teams will play 36 holes Monday, beginning with a 7:30 a.m. CT shotgun start. The final round is slated to begin at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Joiner, juniors Abigail Smee and Bailey Tyree, sophomore Megan Clarke and freshman Lizzie Loy will represent WKU in team competition. Sophomore Caroline Cavin will participate as an individual.

The Lady Toppers are coming off a seventh-place finish in North Florida's UNF Collegiate, in which they moved up four spots on the leaderboard on the final day.

Joiner recorded her fifth top-15 performance of the season in a tie for 12th.
