EL PASO, Texas - Redshirt senior Catika Slay racked up 5,123 points in the heptathlon at the Conference USA Outdoor Championships on Thursday and Friday, tallying four top-five marks at Kidd Field.
The Memphis, Tenn., native finished in fourth place as she earned the women's squad five points by completing seven events. Her two best showings came in the 200-meter dash (24.95) and long jump (5.72m) where she placed third in both events.
Jenessa Jackson did her part as well posting four points for the Red and White in the hammer throw with a season-best mark of 55.12m (180'10") to finish fifth. On the men's side in the hammer, Stuart Nichols set a personal record posting a 47.98m (157'5") mark to finish in 15th place.
In the 10,000m race, Endalow Takele crossed the finish line in 30:45.15 to place third, giving the Hilltoppers six team points. Julien Cuyeu clocked a 34:45.87 (13th) and Sammy Kipkirui finished in 14th place (35:27.82), while on the women's side Katie Lever posted a time of 39:46.03, good for 11th place.
Kaila Smith also competed in the multi-events like Slay finishing in the women's heptathlon with a total of 3,642 points. Her best event came in the 200-meter dash, where the senior sprinted in 25.49 seconds to finish in fourth place.
After two days of the four-day event, the Lady Toppers have totaled nine points and currently sit in sixth place, while the men's team is in seventh place with a total of six points.
The 2017 Conference USA Outdoor Championships will resume Saturday at 2 p.m. CT with the women's discus event at UTEP's Kidd Field.
