The day's opening contest saw freshman Shelby Nunn get the start in the circle and toss 4.0 innings of three-hit ball. Kelsey Aikey threw the tilt's final three frames, allowing two hits while striking out six.
WKU got off to a hot start on Saturday. Jordan Thomas led off with a first-pitch double and came home when Maddie Bowlds sent a triple to the fence in left-center field. After a Kendall Smith walk, Brittany Vaughn got on board with a double of her own. WKU's top four batters of the order each touched the plate for a 4-0 lead after the first inning.
With a 5-0 lead heading into the bottom of the third, Haylee Towers and Morgan McElroy singled to set up a three-run Rebekah Engelhardt home run into the second level of the new parking structure.
Game two saw Cassidy Blackford get the nod in the circle who went 4.0 innings while allowing just two hits with four strikeouts. Towers closed things out, tossing the final 3.0 innings allowing three hits with one strikeout and zero walks.
The Hilltoppers put up three runs in the bottom of the first as Thomas drew a leadoff walk before Bowlds knocked a double to get things going. Vaughn followed with her first of two triples of the game to bring the first two runners around before a Kelsey McGuffin sacrifice fly plated the shortstop.
Volunteer State scored its lone run of the day in the top of the second inning but the Hilltoppers responded in the bottom of the frame to make the score 5-1. The brunt of the WKU damage came in the bottom of the fourth when the Hilltoppers plated seven runners. Thomas, Bowlds and Vorbrink all made two plate appearances in the frame while everyone else appeared once.
McGuffin knocked WKU's second long ball of the day with a three-run shot to left-center field and finished with a team-high four RBI in the game.
Vaughn closed out the game's scoring with a triple that she ultimately scored on due to a VSCC error.
