BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – WKU Softball wrapped up its road fall scrimmage slate during the third weekend of play as the Hilltoppers split the weekend doubleheader over in Lexington against Kentucky. The Wildcats claimed the day's opening contest 7-1 before WKU secured game two by a 3-2 score.
Game one of the day saw WKU strike first as Jordan Thomas crossed the plate after reaching base her second time at the plate. Kelsey McGuffin picked up the Hilltoppers' lone RBI in the tilt with a base hit to plate Thomas in the top of the third inning.
UK knotted things up with the equalizer in the bottom of the fourth inning before scoring the rest of its runs in the bottom of the sixth. The final game one line read one run, eight hits, zero errors for the Red and White while Kentucky's went seven runs, 10 hits, one error.
Haylee Towers (4.0 IP) and Kelsey Aikey (2.0 IP) split time in the circle for WKU, each allowing five hits.
Tables turned in game two as UK struck first during its first time at bat. WKU found the equalizer in the top of the third inning and took the lead a frame later. Kentucky struck again in the bottom of the fourth to tie things at 2-2 before WKU got the final say in the top of the fifth for the 3-2 victory.
McGuffin and Rebekah Engelhardt both registered home runs in the game while Maddie Bowlds accounted for the Hilltoppers' third run. Engelhardt had herself a day, notching two hits in both contests, the only Hilltopper with a multi-hit game. The junior's other hit of game two was a double.
Also knocking doubles in game two were Brittany Vaughn and Tommi Stowers for the Red and White. Vaughn accounted for WKU's third RBI.
Shelby Nunn went all 7.0 innings in the circle for WKU. The freshman allowed two earned runs from the Wildcats while striking out both batters the hosts put in the cleanup spot.
The game two line score read three runs, six hits and one error by the Hilltoppers while Kentucky finished with two runs, 10 hits and no errors.
While fall scrimmage records haven't been kept, the last time WKU defeated Kentucky in the spring took place on April 5, 2007, in Lexington. WKU claimed the 10-4 decision in game two of the doubleheader.
WKU Softball will close its fall scrimmage slate this Saturday (Oct. 21) with a doubleheader against Motlow C.C. starting at noon CT, on The Hill. The Hilltoppers' fall scrimmage record sits at 5-1 entering the fall ball finale.
