GREENVILLE, N.C. — Four of five Lady Toppers improved their score Tuesday as the WKU women's golf team jumped to a sixth-place finish in a deep field at the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate.
After finishing Monday's first two rounds in eighth as a team, the Lady Toppers carded a 300 on Tuesday for a 916 (306-310-300) total, placing them sixth in the 18-team event hosted by East Carolina at Greenville Country Club.
WKU finished ahead of the other two Conference USA teams in the field – Southern Miss and Marshall, who were eighth and ninth, respectively.
"I was proud of how they came back with the lowest round today," WKU head coach Adam Gary said. "I felt like we played better than our score yesterday, but sometimes the breaks don't go your way. We will learn from our mistakes and look to improve throughout the rest of the fall."
Junior Katie Story finished tied for 11th, her best individual result since placing eighth last season at the John Kirk Panther Intercollegiate in March. Story shot a 76 on Tuesday to complete a 224 (74-74-76) total.
She was followed on the card by junior Georgina Blackman, who turned in WKU's lowest round of the tournament Tuesday with an even-par 72. Blackman finished tied for 15th at 226 (75-79-72).
Freshman Mary Joiner also bounced back from a rough start with a 75 on Tuesday. She tied for 41st at 233 (82-76-75). Junior Emily Alexander tied for 55th at 237 (77-82-78), and senior Daniela Galassi tied for 60th at 238 (80-81-77).
Host East Carolina won the team competition with an 880 total, while Morehead State's Anna Magnusson was the individual medalist with a 212 tally.
WKU takes some time off from competition now before it returns to the course for the Memphis Women's Intercollegiate, hosted by Memphis on Oct. 17-18 at Ridgeway Country Club in Germantown, Tenn.
