BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- WKU softball is set to close its non-conference schedule Tuesday evening as the Lady Toppers travel to Murray, Kentucky, for a doubleheader with Murray State. The first pitch with the Racers is set for 4:30 p.m. CT.
The two teams were originally set to play two on Wednesday, April 6, but inclement weather forced the doubleheader to be postponed for Tuesday.
WKU (16-24, 7-8 C-USA) is coming off a tough Saturday at the WKU Softball Complex as the Lady Toppers dropped a pair of hard fought contests late to Samford.
The opener with the Bulldogs marked WKU's sixth extra inning game on the year as Samford prevailed, 8-1, after tallying seven runs in the top of the ninth inning. The two teams were knotted 9-9 heading into the seventh in the nightcap before the Bullldogs totaled five runs in order to prevail, 14-9.
As a team, WKU's hitting .263 on the year led by Brooke Holloway's .356 average. The senior shortstop hit double digit home runs with 10 on the year Saturday after knocking out a pair against Samford. Rookie Bryce Holmgren (.324) and sophomore Jordan Mauch (.314) rounds out WKU's .300 hitters.
Kathryn Downing (6-3) continues to lead WKU in the circle with a 2.92 ERA as the sophomore has thrown 76.2 innings in 18 appearances. Hannah Parker (10-15) has appeared in 31 contests with 24 starts as the sophomore leads the Lady Toppers with 123 strikeouts on the year.
Murray State (18-28, 8-13 OVC) comes into Tuesday having dropped its past five contests. Jessica Twaddle leads a Racer team who is hitting .268 on the year. Twaddle is one of two players hitting over .300 as the junior currently has a .329 average on 140 at-bats with 46 hits, 11 doubles and 21 RBI. Senior Shelbey Miller has a .325 average with a team-high 49 hits on 151 at-bats and 16 RBI.
In the circle, Mason Robinson (13-14) leads Murray State with a 1.97 ERA in 34 appearances. The junior has recorded a team-high 97 strikeouts in 181.1 innings.
WKU leads the overall series with the Racers, 7-1, and has captured the last six contests, including a doubleheader sweep last season in Bowling Green.
