BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- WKU softball dropped a pair of highly competitive contests to Lipscomb Wednesday evening at the WKU Softball Complex.
In total, the Bisons used a pair of home runs in order to notch six of their eight total runs on the day as Lipscomb (14-12) defeated WKU, 5-1, in the first game and shutout the Lady Toppers, 3-0, in the nightcap.
GAME 1: WKU 1, Lipscomb 5
A single swing proved to be all the difference in the opening game of the midweek doubleheader as a grand slam from Lipscomb's Sarah Higgins in the top of the fifth inning broke a 1-1 tie and gave the Bisons a commanding lead over the Lady Toppers.
The game-changing inning started off well for WKU as consecutive groundouts quickly saddled Lipscomb with two outs. Consecutive infield singles put runners on first and second base for the Bisons and a walk extended the visitors inning. With the bases loaded, Higgins used the opportunity to empty the bases with a grand slam to left center field.
WKU's only run of the day came off an RBI single from Hannah Parker as the sophomore drove in senior Brooke Holloway who reached base on a lead-off single.
Lipscomb outhit WKU, 7-3, on the contest. Along with Parker and Holloway, freshman Kelsey McGuffin was the only other Lady Topper to record a hit.
Junior Kathryn Downing (3-1) recorded her first loss of the year after giving up four earned runs in 5.1 innings in the circle.
GAME 2: WKU 0, Lipscomb 3
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning, sophomore Carleigh Chaumont was robbed from the potential game-tying run as a Lipscomb left fielder nabbed the ball from beyond the fence.
The Bisons used the long ball in order to separate itself from WKU once again as a two-run shot in the sixth inning extended the Bisons' advantage over the Lady Toppers.
That hit was all Lipscomb would need as WKU failed to record a hit the rest of the way as the Bisons held on in order to record the sweep on the day.
WKU's Hannah Parker (5-7) was given the loss but the sophomore had a career-day, recording a career-high 11 strikeouts in a complete seven innings in the circle.
The Lady Toppers return this weekend as WKU (8-12) is set to open Conference USA play by hosting a three-game series with FIU this weekend. The series begins Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. CT and will conclude Sunday with a noon CT contest against the Panthers. .
