BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - C-USA Player of the Year Kendall Noble recorded the first triple-double in C-USA Tournament history and second of the season, but WKU fell just short, 66-63, in the C-USA Quarterfinals against Marshall inside Bartow Arena on Thursday evening.
Noble led the Lady Toppers (24-6) with 17 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists and became the only player in the nation with a pair of triple-doubles this season. Noble owns both triple-doubles in WKU history after also notching 17 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists against Charlotte on Jan. 23.
The trio of Tashia Brown (14), Ivy Brown (11) and Taylor Brown (11) joined Noble in double figures on the night. Ivy Brown also approached a double-double with seven rebounds.
For Marshall (20-10), Talequia Hamilton led with 16 points and was joined in double figures by Leah Scott, who finished with 15. Scott also pulled down nine rebounds, while Norrisha Victrum led the Thundering Herd with seven assists.
WKU jumped out to an early lead after scoring eight of the game's first 10 points, four of which came off the hands of Noble. The redshirt junior also assisted on Ivy Brown's basket during the stretch to put the Thundering Herd into an early hole.
Leading 18-8 early in the second quarter, WKU's lead dropped to five points, 18-13, as Marshall scored five unanswered points from three different players. The Lady Toppers rebuilt an eight-point lead, but an 11-3 Thundering Herd run tied the game at 25-25 with 2:45 left before halftime. Marshall again used balanced scoring during the run as four separate players netted points.
Despite losing the lead, WKU battled back to retake the advantage before heading into the locker room. Ivy Brown knocked down the first three-pointer of the night for the Lady Toppers with 30 seconds left and WKU held a 31-28 lead at the halftime break.
WKU pushed its lead to as many as nine points midway through the third quarter on a jumper by Tashia Brown with 5:16 on the clock. Much like the second quarter, however, Marshall responded with a 12-3 run over the next three minutes to knot the game at 46-46 on a layup by Victrum.
The Thundering Herd took a 51-47 lead with under a minute to play in the quarter, but layups by Taylor Brown and Tashia Brown tied the game at 51-51 heading into the final 10 minutes.
Both sides exchanged runs of five unanswered points over the first five minutes of the fourth quarter, eventually settling for another tie at 56-56. A pair of free throws by Marshall's Chelsey Romero gave the Thundering Herd a 58-56 edge, but four straight points by the Lady Toppers gave WKU a 60-58 advantage with 1:47 to play.
Marshall took a 62-60 lead with less than a minute on the clock, but Noble's three-pointer with two seconds to play cut the lead down to just one, 64-63. WKU was unable to come away with a steal on the inbounds pass and came up just short of completing its late rally.
