DENTON, Texas -- Junior Bria Mosley scored her fourth goal of the season in the 82nd minute, but WKU could not overcome a two-goal deficit against preseason C-USA favorite North Texas, falling 2-1 at the Mean Green Soccer Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Lady Toppers (8-4-0, 3-1-0) kept pace with the Mean Green (8-3-1, 3-0-0) on the afternoon, firing just one less shot (13-12) as nine different players registered a shot on the afternoon. Sarah Gorham led WKU with three shots, including one on goal, while Mosley, Haley Baldridge and Hannah Chua also tallied shots on target.
Junior Allison Leone played the full 90 minutes between the posts for the Lady Toppers, making four saves. For North Texas, Miranda Schoening manned the goal with three saves while giving up Mosley's late strike.
North Texas jumped in front just 19 seconds into the match on a goal from Hailey Sutton. Set up by one of the top scorers in C-USA in Rachel Holden, Sutton collected the pass inside the box and beat Leone to give the Mean Green an early 1-0 lead. The goal was the first given up by the WKU defense in 533 minutes, a mark that was the third-longest active shutout streak in the nation.
Gorham nearly pulled the Lady Toppers even in the 39th minute after finding space along the right side of the box. The redshirt sophomore fired from in close, but Schoening was there for the stop as WKU entered the locker room still seeking an equalizer.
The Lady Toppers again nearly knotted the match in the 63rd minute as Chua tested Schoening with a headed effort on goal, but again the North Texas goalkeeper corralled the shot to maintain the one-goal lead.
North Texas doubled its advantage at the 69:57 mark, taking a 2-0 lead on Cat Sebazco's goal. Anna Flobeck's initial attempt struck the post but rebounded directly to Sebazco, who converted the chance for her second goal of the year.
Caitlin Hesse came close to cutting into the lead, striking the crossbar in the 74th minute, but Mosley's strike from the top of the box at the 81:52 mark finally pulled a goal back for the Lady Toppers. Gorham's pass found the Conyers, Ga., native in space, and Mosley buried the attempt past Schoening to cut the deficit to 2-1 with less than 10 minutes remaining.
Baldridge's shot from the right side in the 87th minute gave WKU its final chance of the afternoon to equalize, but the senior could not find the back of the net as the Mean Green held off the Lady Toppers' late rally.
