GERMANTOWN, Tenn. – WKU's Mary Joiner shot the second-best score in the field in the final round Tuesday, as the freshman surged up the leaderboard at the Memphis Women's Intercollegiate.
Joiner carded an even-par 71 – tying the best score of her young career – in the final round at Ridgeway Country Club and tied for 12th in the individual field with a three-round total of 229 (82-76-71). She started the day tied for 41st.
It was the second top-15 finish of the year for Joiner, who significantly improved her play in each round at Memphis. Joiner won her first college tournament earlier this season at Murray State's Drake Creek Invitational.
The Lady Toppers held at ninth in the 13-team field with a total of 927 (307-317-303). Host Memphis notched the win at 895.
WKU junior Georgina Blackman finished tied for 24th with a 231 (73-78-80 total). Blackman has been in the top 25 in each of the Lady Toppers' first three tournaments.
Junior Emily Alexander rallied with an even-par 72 in the final round, which was her best score of the season. She tied for 37th at 234 (80-82-72).
Junior Katie Story tied for 39th with a 235 (74-81-80) total, while freshman Abigail Smee tied for 53rd at 241 (79-80-82) competing as an individual. Senior Daniela Galassi tied for 69th at 246 (80-85-81).
Cal State Fullerton's Martin Edberg was the individual champion with a 211 total.
The Lady Toppers return to action next week at FIU's Pat Bradley Invitational on Oct. 23-25.
