MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Sophomore Bryant Evans and freshman newcomer Blake Smith paced WKU with Top 25 finishes as the Hilltoppers opened their fall competition season with an eighth place team finish at the Memphis Intercollegiate on Tuesday.
As a team, the Hilltoppers shot 21-over 885 (296-296-293) and finished one stroke behind Cincinnati. Evans and Smith each tied for 24th place, firing four-over 220 over three rounds. Evans went 74-72-74 while Smith went 75-72-73.
A trio of Hilltoppers, including seniors Trey Aguirre and Austin King, and sophomore Billy Tom Sargent, rounded out the five-man team card as they all tied for 45th place with a 10-over 226. Sargent's two-under 70 in the third round of the event was the team's lowest round score overall as Aguirre shot 75-75-76, King went 72-77-77, and Sargent carded 79-77-70.
Freshman Stuart Easton also participated as an individual and finished tied for 67th with a 19-over 235 (74-84-77) in his first collegiate event.
Memphis took home the team title with a five-under 859, and Lipscomb's Dawson Armstrong was the individual medalist with an eight-under 208 (72-65-71). The Hilltoppers finished ninth in last season's Memphis Intercollegiate and improved their team score by nine strokes (894 in 2014).
WKU is back on the course on October 4-5 when they travel to Akron, Ohio for the Firestone Invitational, hosted at the Firestone Country Club.
